New Directions in Mechanical Engineering

Tuesday, April 7, 2009
The executive summary from some sources of new direction in mechanical engineering is described here. Nowadays, there is a tendency to a changing of new directions in mechanical engineering. It is proved by the results from professionals and academicians discussions and their marvelous hard works, as listed bellows:
  1. New Directions in Mechanical Engineering, Report from a Workshop Organized by the Big-Ten-Plus Mechanical Engineering Department Heads, January 25-27, 2002
  2. The ASME Summer Annual Meeting in June 2003.
  3. The ASME International Mechanical Engineering Education Conference, March 6-9, 2004, at Clearwater Beach, Florida.
  4. A report of the Global Summit on the Future of Mechanical Engineering, July 2008
The ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), through an ASME International Mechanical Engineering Education Conference on March 6-9, 2004, at Clearwater Beach - Florida, presents a paper of “A Vision of The Future of Mechanical engineering Education”. It is aimed to promote a shared vision for the future of mechanical engineering education in the context of new and rapidly emerging technologies and disciplines, national and global trends, societal challenges for the 21st century, and associated opportunities for the profession. This vision is stressed on developing an innovation in mechanical engineering education. It will prepare graduates to pursue their individual professional interests well beyond perceived boundaries associated with the discipline’s traditional roles, in keeping with the current and future applications and associated flexibility of the profession. In this way, mechanical engineering will attract the best and the brightest students and faculty, including women and other traditionally underrepresented groups, many of whom may not otherwise consider entering the profession.

Referring to the ASME report of the Global Summit on the Future of Mechanical Engineering, July 2008 that mechanical engineering will evolve and collaborate as a global profession over the next 20 years through a shared vision to develop engineering solutions that foster a cleaner, healthier, safer and sustainable world. And, the strategic themes for mechanical engineering are:
  1. Developing new technologies to meet grand challenges in energy, environment, food, housing, water, transportation, safety, and health
  2. Creating global, sustainable engineering solutions that meet the basic needs of all people
  3. Fostering global partnership and locally appropriate development
  4. Connecting practitioners with the joy of discovery, creation and application of engineering solutions to improve human life.
On this contact, of course, we have a good news on how to prepare the next development curricula, especially for educators, in teaching and learning for students in order to fulfill standard requirements to service people as an anticipation ways to this new direction. The primary key issue from that result is 2028 Vision for Mechanical Engineering i.e. Technology Serving People.
